Essentials of My Audiobook Narration Process

From Cozy Studio Setups to Character Voice Magic

Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at my audiobook narration process! Whether you’re an indie romance author, a fellow narrator, or an audiobook enthusiast, I’m excited to share the essentials that bring every story to life—from my cozy studio setup to the magic of character voices.

1. Creating the Perfect Studio Sanctuary

  • Soundproofing: My space is lined with foam panels for that crisp, professional sound—no barking dogs or lawnmowers allowed!
  • Equipment: I use a FIFINE T669 USB mic, iPad with iAnnotate for scripts, and Audacity for editing. Upgrades are always on my radar as my business grows.
  • Comfort: A cozy chair, warm lighting, and my favorite mug of throat tea sets the mood for long recording sessions.
  • Backup Protocols: Daily and weekly backups (Google Drive, hard drive) ensure no project is ever lost.

2. Prepping the Manuscript

  • Deep Reading: I read through the manuscript, marking character cues, emotional beats, and tricky pronunciations.
  • Character Mapping: Each main character gets a profile—age, accent, quirks, and emotional arcs—so their voice stays consistent from chapter one to the finale.
  • Client Collaboration: Authors fill out a character voice intake form, and we hop on a call to discuss vision, tone, and any special requests.

3. The Art of Character Voice Magic

  • Voice Reference Library: I keep a digital library of sample voices and reference notes to ensure every character is distinct.
  • Experimentation: Before recording, I test out voices—sometimes sending samples for author approval (especially for series consistency or unique accents).
  • Vocal Health: Warm-ups, hydration, and regular breaks are non-negotiable for keeping my voice at its best.

4. Recording & Editing Flow

  • Session Structure: I record in focused sprints, reviewing each section for pacing, emotion, and technical quality.
  • Editing: Every take is polished in Audacity, with attention to RMS, noise floor, and ACX specs. I use a standardized checklist for quality control.
  • Client Checkpoints: Authors receive milestone updates at 25%, 50%, 75%, and final stages, with opportunities for feedback and revisions.

5. Delivering the Finished Product

  • Final QA: A last round of checks ensures every detail shines—voice consistency, technical specs, and emotional delivery.
  • Celebration Toolkit: I provide launch graphics, marketing clips, and a follow-up toolkit to help authors celebrate their audiobook’s debut.
