Time blocking is a time management system where you divide your day into small “blocks” if time, where each block is designated to a certain tasks.

People are successful at time blocking because it helps with single-tasking, which is, keeping your focus on one task at a time so you can increase your productivity. This way you can plan all your tasks out and you won’t have to multitask, which cause more stress on a person than you may think.

How to Time Block

In order to make a time blocking schedule, you will need an hourly calendar. I use Google Calendar, it works great for me, but you can use any hourly calendar that works for you.

The first ting you need to do is create your to-do list for the next day or if you know what is going on for the whole week, you plan out your week instead. Make sure you put the important tasks on your list first, but don’t forget the little things like your lunch break and stretch breaks if you are sitting down all day. Plan some time to get up, walk around and get moving.

Second, You need to task batch. This is where you will put similar tasks into batches, such as checking your email, or social media, and making phone calls. These can all be put into one time block.

Third, See if there is a theme to your day. If you always work on certain items on the same day every week, you can theme your time block schedule. For example, if you always work on Marketing on Mondays, you know to schedule your time blocks accordingly. This is a more advanced version of Time blocking and is not necessary.

  3. Always stick to your schedule as much as possible – we know that sometimes things come up and it needs to change a little, but it doesn’t have to ruin the rest of your day. Just adjust and continue on with your schedule.
  4. Not scheduling everything – You always take a day or two ahead of time to plan your time blocks, this gives you time to think through your schedule and get all your tasks on your to-do list.
  5. Revise as needed – not everything will go as planned, so revise where you see fit.
