Being trapped in a tower for hundred of years with your mind as your only companion will take its toll, but what happens when finally released?
About the Story
Erin Bedford did a fantastic job creating a world where mages run the world and humans are lower in social status.
Eva, the main character in Rapunzel Untamed, spends hundreds of years locked, chained and under a spell that would keep her alive, but unable to escape. Her only companion are her own thoughts. Until the day some handsome mages find her tower and rescue her.
WIth a new world and questions of how her tower was found along with no memories of the past, Eva takes her chances with her handsome mage rescuers.
Things I loved
I’m partial to new spins on a good fairy tale and this one is no exception. The twist on a classic tale is intriguing. The main character’s complete loss of memory with visions of the past plaguing her; an interesting twist to the tale.
Eva connects to her rescuers pretty quickly, except for Blake and Gage who have qualms with her being within the group. Though they are in agreement with the rest to keep the council away, they are still questioning her motives.
The world building is fantastic as are the diversity in character personality and plot.
What I Question
My only qualm is how quickly Eva takes to her new world. An example that sticks with me is the bathroom. Why, I’m not sure, but it does. With only being in the house a few hours, she knows how to work the toilet and shower. Though I can see the similarities of the toilet with an outhouse. The fact that it flushes with liquid receding and then refilling should give her pause as well as the sound. She just accepts it and moves on.
Though curiosity shows through, I feel she is more adept than someone from her era should be.
Conclusion
I have to admit this is the first of Erin Bedford’s stories I have read and though I found Eva’s acceptance of her new world so quickly as a bit unbelievable, I would still continue the series. There are still unanswered questions about how her tower appeared and how she was able to be rescued along with her strange vision/memories of the past.
If you like spins on classic fairy tales, I would recommend you give this story a try. You may not find anything wrong with Eva’s take on the the world around her, so go ahead and take the plunge.
